This gift was presented by a street artist to JRD Tata on his birthday. This painting is placed in the Tata Museum, in Jamshedpur, India. Nobody had the ability to understand how he made such a painting! The artist promised to reveal the mystery soon behind this “anamorphic painting” but it was too late as JRD Tata was no more.
The secret lies in the short shiny steel rod which is put on a mark in circular shape in a particualr position. And the image that we see is the refelction of the mark. This form of art is called ‘anamorphosis’. And yes it’s a greek word. To break it down to you, the word ‘ana’ means back or again and the word ‘morphe’ means shape or form. Anamorphosis is nothing but a distorted projection which requires the viewer to make use of special devices to recreate the image.
The first early known anamorphosis painting was made by Leonardo da Vinci and the painting is called “Leonardo’s eye”. Such kinds of paintings can even be used privacy or safety purposes. Coming back to the current painting, you will see a blurred picture in the center. It is difficult to even imagine that the cresent moon shaped image would be of the famous entrepreneur. Reminds me of 3D glasses. It is only when the iron rod is placed that we see what the painting beholds. Isn’t it marvellous?!
